UFC on ESPN 19 – Hermansson vs. Vettori: Precise Picks

Quick Takes for the Co-Main and Main Events

Jack Hermansson (+109) vs. Marvin Vettori (-133)

Jack Hermansson (21-5) in his career. Coming off a sweet submission of Kevin Gastulman. Will be attempting to keep the momentum going against a tough opponent in Marvin Vettori (15-4-1). Hermansson has surpassed expectations and is looking like the submission specialist MMA fans knew he could be. Vettori is the obvious villain who can get in his opponents head like he did in his last fight against Karl Roberson. Vettori has one of the highest fighting IQ’s I have ever seen in the octagon so there is no reason to fret over him being slightly favored by the oddsmakers. I don’t feel like Vettori has gotten in Hermansson’s psyche. Hermansson having a 3.5″ reach advantage will be useful because tying up with Vettori or playing into his hands could prove costly for Hermansson. I anticipate a focused Jack Hermansson looking to win this fight by setting up a submission after both fighters take some damage.

Ovince St. Preux (+151) vs. Jamahal Hill (-187)

Another chance to watch one of my favorite fighters in Ovince St. Preux (25-14) put on a show. He will face the up and coming heavy hitter Jamahal Hill (7-0-1NC) who is looking to keep his perfect record in tact. At this point in St. Preux’s career he has learned to counter whatever his opponent brings inside the octagon. Hill is an inch taller and St. Preux has an inch more reach. I have a hard time wrapping my head around St. Preux being a “gate keeper”. If Hill is going to win he will have to grind this one out. St. Preux still has a championship run left in him. If you watched his amazing knockout of Alonzo Menifield in his last fight you will understand what I am telling you. Giving St. Preux a fight against an unranked opponent (after that performance), I can almost see him feeling disrespected. Que the fireworks. When I look at Jamahal Hill’s strength of opponent its not even comparable to the wars Ovince St. Preux has been in and in many cases conquered. Styles make fights and that age old theme will rear it’s ugly head tonight.
