Georgia Tech vs. Florida State best bet

Week 2 underway in the college football season and Georgia Tech vs. Florida State is always a fun game. Florida State leads the all-time series against Georgia Tech 14-10-1. Through the 90s and early 2000s this match-up was fairly common. However, it’s been 5 years since the last time these two high-profile programs met. In that 2015 game Georgia Tech edged Florida State 21-16. Believe it or not; I was watching that game with a big bowl of chips and salsa in front of me.

Florida State enjoys throwing the ball and backed it up last year by finishing 33rd in passing yards. Junior James Blackman returns for Florida State as starting quarterback. He throws a sweet deep ball but is susceptible to being picked off fairly easily. Georgia Tech has been keeping quiet about who their starting quarterback will be leading up to this game. Frankly when we see that from a team it is usually to hinder the opposing teams preparations. Cutting through the fat here, Georgia Tech is a run balanced offense. Last season Georgia Tech ranked 72nd in rushing yards per game opposed to Florida State who ranked 93rd.

When we flip over to the defensive side of the ball we see Florida State is better at stopping the run. Georgia Tech is better at stopping the pass. 3rd down is the most important down in football. In that category Florida State converts 35.6% on 3rd down. Opposed to 30.1% by Georgia Tech. A 5.1% differential matters since we will see 3rd down a lot in this game.

One area in this game that pops out at me is time of possession. Both teams are nearly identical in this category. Then if you read the tea leaves and look into total yards per game; Florida State wallops Georgia Tech in that category. 408.3 total yards per game from Florida State opposed to Georgia Tech’s 286.3 total yards per game. If you told me Florida State controls the ball equal to Georgia Tech but out gains them by 122 yards I’d say this will be an easy win for Florida State.

What you should take away from this write-up among other things is Florida State has an efficient offensive unit. Florida State will be able to create many opportunities to score. Expect Georgia Teach to establish an rushing attack early on to get their quarterback more comfortable in the pocket. Both teams showed their hand last year at how awful the defenses can be. You know what that means?

My best bet: OVER 50.5 (-110).

Players To Watch For

  • Seminoles (QB Junior) James Blackman #1 – Important year for Blackman to boost his draft stock. He controls his own destiny and by having a big game this afternoon can impress NFL scouts.
  • Seminoles (DT Senior) Marvin Wilson #21 – Wilson is returning from an hand-injury but is an first-team all-conference player looking to get back on track and show the NFL scouts he is 100 % ready.
  • Yellow Jackets (RB Junior) Jordan Mason #27 – Almost rushed for a 1,000 yards last season and his numbers are trending up since he’s been at Georgia Tech.
  • Yellow Jackets (WR Junior) Malachi Carter #15 – This is my favorite wide-out on the Yellow Jackets and he is poised for a big year. I like his leadership and ability to run after the catch.
